Stuart Devlin - Wilshire Staysharp Knife MK1

In 1964 a US market survey showed that 80% of Americans didn’t know how to sharpen a knife. ‘Aha!’ thought Dennis Jackson, a design engineer for Wiltshire Cutlery in Melbourne, ‘a knife that sharpens itself is the answer!’ In an instant he had identified a whole new range of products with an advantage over any blade ever sold before.

Stuart Devlin AO designed the first distinctive wall mounted scabbard.

Peter Bayly, one of Melbourne’s pioneering industrial design consultants, designed the classic 70s range for Staysharp which was awarded the Prince Phillip Prize and Good Design selection.

Innovators - Australian Design & Innovation is an exhibition that celebrates design and innovation from Australia. The exhibition will feature sixteen digital archives with iconic Australian innovations like wifi, the bionic ear, polymer notes, and innovators including Marc Newson, Michael Simcoe and Denton Corker Marshall.

The exhibition design theme highlights the invention of wifi by the CSIRO in Australia presenting cloud based content on IOS devices utilising an app and mobile content delivery technology developed by Art Processors.

Curator Ian Wong is collaborating with a traditional Chinese artist merging ancient Chinese craft with the latest lightweight metal 3D printing technology. The resulting 3D printed traditional Chinese seals (yang) are featured as the “trigger” for this sustainable and innovative interactive exhibition.

The digital archive for each project is activated automatically as visitors approach each individually crafted seal resting on a small podium.

Innovation and cloud based technologies represent the future and this exhibition highlights Australia’s proud history of innovation and celebrates our contemporary design professionals.
